1. Who (or what) most inspired you to pursue a life within Futbol? Whether or not you work within futbol, what is it about the game that brings forth a passion in you?
My journey in futbol started by watching my older brother, Habtom. Seeing the joy he got from playing and his determination to practice tricks for hours inspired me. I admired his passion and wanted to match his energy. Futbol gives me a sense of freedom, it’s a place where I can be myself, learn from my mistakes, and always have another chance to improve.
2. What are you most proud of in your Futbol journey?
I’m really proud of the connections I’ve made along the way. Playing on teams with people from all over the world has enriched my life and helped me grow as a person. It’s become a lifestyle for me, keeping me active and focused off the field as well.
3. What has been the biggest challenge (on or off the field) that you have had to overcome and how have you dealt with it?
The biggest challenge that I’ve had to overcome is balancing the care for my senior parents, who can’t drive or speak English, while pursuing my love for futbol, attending school, and working has been tough. I learned the importance of organization and staying calm when things get overwhelming. While some challenges felt out of my control, I realized I could control my reactions, which has helped me become more resilient.
4. Given your current role / situation, how do you find meaning in the game?
In my current situation, I want to inspire the next generation of players. I believe futbol can shape lives for the better, and I’m dedicated to helping my community through the sport. The game has given me so much, and I’m excited about what I can still learn.
5. What is (was) your favorite thing about playing Futbol?
My favorite part of playing is keeping possession and outsmarting my opponents. I enjoy simplifying the game and playing with high intensity. There’s something special about watching the ball soar after I shoot, especially from outside the box; it’s unpredictable and thrilling.
6. What player(s) have you most enjoyed watching?
I’ve always enjoyed watching players like Andrés Iniesta, Mesut Özil, and Yaya Touré because they played in my position. Now, I find joy in watching my current teammates in action, their skills and teamwork inspire me.
7. Do you have any advice for younger players? What would you say to your younger self about this beautiful game and / or about life?
I’d tell younger players to stay active and not let anything hold them back from playing. I faced many challenges, including unreliable transportation, but I kept pushing forward. To my younger self, I’d say to step out of my comfort zone and seek new experiences and especially make connections with people that could help you be recognized. that’s how you grow.
8. What is a dream / hope of yours for the future and does futbol play a part in it? If so, how?
My dream is to make my parents proud by graduating college. I will be the first in my family to achieve this. Futbol will play a big role in my future—I aim to start an organization that offers my community opportunities to engage, learn, and support each other.
